Mauricio Pochettino makes major PSG decision after summer talks to return to Tottenham

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has agreed a new two-year deal with French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentine was strongly linked with a return to Spurs this summer as the north London club searched high and low for a successor to Jose Mourinho, who was sacked in April. football.london understands that talks over his potential return took place and he was keen on the switch.

In the end, a move failed to come to fruition, with Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici eventually selecting Nuno Espirito Santo, who was announced last month.

Now, a return for Pochettino looks even more remote with the 49-year-old having signed an extended deal at the Parc des Princes until 2023, as announced on Friday evening.

Speaking to PSG’s official website after signing his new deal in the French capital, he said: “I’m really very happy, for myself and also for my staff.

“It’s very important for us to feel the confidence of the club and we will give our maximum so that the supporters are proud of Paris Saint-Germain.

“That’s why we will try and reach our objectives all together, as one. Twenty years ago I was captain of this club and today I am the coach… It’s a dream come true.”

Pochettino has been with PSG since his appointment in January having replaced now Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel.

He lifted the Coupe des France in his first season in charge but failed to claim the title with Lille being named as Ligue 1 champions – Pochettino’s men finishing second and just a point behind.

He also managed to help PSG to their second-consecutive appearance in the Champions League semi-finals, only to lose out to Spurs’ Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Upon his arrival in Paris, where he was also a player, the Argentine only originally signed an 18-month contract running to the summer of 2022.

That has now been extended a further year and he will now hope to reclaim the league title as he embarks on his first full season at the helm.
