Mikel Arteta and Edu can complete scouting mission for ‘amazing’ £8.5m Arsenal transfer

Leeds United and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips would be an “amazing” signing for Arsenal.

That’s the view of former Gunners ace Michael Thomas who has delivered his verdict on the 25-year-old who has already made quite the impact at this summer’s European Championships.

Phillips claimed the assist for Raheem Sterling’s goal against Croatia last Sunday as the Three Lions got their Euro 2020 campaign off to the perfect start.

The Leeds ace could be in action on Friday night when England face Scotland in a highly anticipated clash at Wembley Stadium, thus providing Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu with a chance to complete a scouting mission.

Arsenal have been linked with several midfielders this summer, from Ruben Neves to Sander Berge, but Thomas is of the opinion that Phillips would be the perfect addition to Arteta’s squad.

Although, he concedes that the midfielder will probably stay at Elland Road for another year.

“I think Phillips would be amazing for Arsenal,” Thomas told CaughtOffside. “His physical and technical qualities are amazing.

“I do believe he probably has one more year at Leeds but we could see a move after that.”

As per the CIES Football Observatory, Phillips’ current estimated transfer value is between €10m-€15m (£8.5m-£12m), but an impressive Euro 2020 could see that figure rise.

Furthermore, if Arsenal don’t take Thomas’ advice, then Phillips’ valuation could increase if he has another fantastic season in the Premier League.

The summer window is officially open, and it’s going to be tough to keep up with the comings and goings in and out of the Emirates.

With that said, Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear has said the club are confident of keeping hold of Phillips.

“We just need Kalvin to keep a little bit of a lid on it in the Euros because if he plays like that again we’ll get some offers, but we’re very confident,” Kinnear said when speaking on BBC Radio Leeds. “It says a lot about Leeds United that Kalvin is proving what all Leeds United fans know about what a great midfielder he is.

“We also know his future is secured at Leeds United. He wants to be here, we want him to be here and that’s a measure of where the club’s got to.”
