Mikel Arteta and Edu told how many transfers Arsenal need to make in the summer window

Arsenal are preparing for a massive squad overhaul in the coming weeks, football.london understands.

After a poor 2020/21 season, the Gunners face a huge summer transfer window – with numerous players expected to leave the Emirates Stadium and a host of names being linked with a move to north London.

football.london reported recently that Mikel Arteta and Edu are expected to address at least five positions before the start of the new campaign.

Now, club icon David Seaman has issued his verdict on the positions Arsenal should address in the summer transfer window.

The ex-England goalkeeper also spoke about the sympathy he feels for Arteta, who came under fire in parts last season.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Seaman said: “When you look at last season, finishing eighth, it’s very disappointing. It’s something that needs to be changed.

“I feel a little bit sorry for Arteta because he’s not got his own team yet, or his own squad.

“He’s inherited players from previous managers. But he’s got to coach those around him to get the best out of them.

“Do we need players? Yes we do. I still feel that the spine of the team isn’t strong enough.

“They need a good defender and midfield player. We need a more consistent attacking player.

“In [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, we do have a quality player. Last season, with all the different problems that he had, he wasn’t consistent enough.

“But you know the quality he’s got, so you don’t really change that.”

The summer window is officially open, and it’s going to be tough to keep up with the comings and goings in and out of the Emirates.

The Gunners did put a bid in for Emiliano Buendia, but the Norwich City playmaker eventually agreed a deal to join Aston Villa instead.

football.london understands that Arteta’s number one priority is re-signing Martin Odegaard this summer, with the former Arsenal loanee returning to Real Madrid upon the expiry of his short-term deal.

The club have also been linked with a central defender following David Luiz’s departure, with Edmond Tapsoba and Ben White both rumoured to be of interest.

Moussa Dembele of Lyon has been linked to the north London outfit with Alexandre Lacazette’s contract situation fairly uncertain as it stands.
