Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Sunday, April 4.
Martinez opens up on Gunners exit
Emiliano Martinez has opened up on “many years of suffering” at Arsenal before he completed a £20million transfer to Aston Villa last summer.
Martinez has been fantastic since signing for Villa last year and has now detailed what life was like for him at the Emirates Stadium.
The Argentine shot-stopper has lifted the lid on what led to him making the permanent move to the Midlands-based club.
“Yes, (I was crying) not for having won a final, but for having overcome my frustrations at a professional level at Arsenal,” he told ESPN Argentina (via Sport Witness) this week.
“There were many years of suffering and having a bad time for not having my chance.
“Not because I didn’t deserve it, but because they didn’t give it to me. At that moment all the bad Sundays that I have spent when I was not summoned at the club came to me, or I went on loan to places I did not want to go because I needed games.
“They never sent me on loan to get me out, but to improve me. That’s why they kept me at the club for so long, because they saw something in me. When I won the cup, I took out the anger that I had inside.
“I am an emotional boy and everything I do I do for my family and that is why those tears came to my eyes.”
Arteta apologises to Arsenal fans
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has apologised to the club’s fans after they were dismantled 3-0 at home to Liverpool on Saturday evening.
The Gunners were second best throughout the game at the Emirates Stadium and deservedly came away with nothing. Diogo Jota headed the opener shortly after the break, with Mohamed Salah on target and Jota again wrapping up the thre points eight minutes from time.
It leaves Arsenal ninth in the table, six points off Tottenham in seventh – having played a game more – and nine off Chelsea in fourth.
“We want to apologise, to our people and our fans,” said Arteta. “This is nowhere near what we want and we have to do better.
“Liverpool completely deserved to win the game, probably with a much bigger margin. They were much better than us in every single department and we were really poor today.
“Today was a big shock in the system. We have been really competitive against the big sides, but today they were really good and we were extremely poor.”
Tierney injury blow
Arsenal fans were gutted to see Kieran Tierney limp off in the first-half of the defeat to Liverpool.
The Scotland left-back went down after a challenge from James Milner just before the break and was replaced by Cedric.
The Gunners will have extra cause for concern as it was a knee problem that kept Tierney out for around a month between January and February this year.
Here’s how fans reacted to the injury on Twitter.
The summer transfer window is just around the corner.
And the rumour mill is already starting to pick up speed.
Arsenal will not have a huge amount of money to spend, but Mikel Arteta will be hoping to make a number of moves, with loanee Martin Odegaard high up the list of priorities to bring in on a permanent deal.
