Mikel Arteta opens up on his Arsenal job after Villarreal loss as Gunners chase French defender

Here is your Arsenal morning digest on Friday, May 7.

Arteta opens up on his Arsenal job

Mikel Arteta has admitted his job as Arsenal manager is under threat following his side’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Villarreal on Thursday evening.

The Gunners scored what looked like a crucial away goal in the first leg in Spain last week, but it turned out to be meaningless after a drab 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

The chances of Arteta ‘s side qualifying for any European competition next season are now very slim and questions may be asked over the Arsenal manager.

Speaking to the media after the draw in north London, Arteta conceded that his job could be under some threat.

“I think everybody’s job is always in scrutiny,” the Gunners boss admitted.

Why Partey was angry with Pepe

It’s fair to say that when Thomas Partey moved to the Emirates last summer, there was huge excitement surrounding the Ghana midfielder’s arrival.

However, down to a variety of reasons, Partey hasn’t lived up to his high expectations in a Gunners shirt just yet.

On 55 minutes of Thursday’s draw with Villarreal, the midfielder misplaced a pass in a dangerous area. This then prompted Partey to angrily ask Nicolas Pepe why he was unable to make a forward run.

Gunners eye move for French defender

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Arsenal are interested in signing Lens defender Loic Bade in the summer transfer window.

Bade has impressed in the French top-flight this season and the report claims that with the Gunners looking for defensive reinforcements ahead of the summer, the centre-back has emerged as a potential option.

The 21-year-old has previously hinted that he could be looking for a move away from Lens this summer, when speaking to L’Equipe back in March.

Bade is a very aggressive defender, who is dominant in the air – standing at 6ft 3inches tall.
