Mikel Arteta reveals when Arsenal will have contract talks with Alexandre Lacazette

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Arsenal will deal with the issue of Alexandre Lacazette’s contract in the summer.

Lacazette has impressed in recent weeks, racking up a goal-tally of 13 for the season, putting him just one behind leading scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

That form, however, may not come without consequence for Arsenal, who face the very real possibility of losing Lacazette this summer amid his expiring contract.

The Frenchman will have just one year remaining on his current deal from the summer, meaning the Gunners will need to renew his contract or sell him to avoid losing the striker for free come the summer of 2022.

Reports earlier this season claimed Arsenal were happy to sell Lacazette this summer with the likes of Atletico Madrid interested, but it seems opinions may have changed, if indeed that was the case, with the 29-year-old’s return to form.

“I think he’s been in really good form for months now. He’s sustaining that level. He’s scoring goals and providing the team with something different as well,” said Arteta at today’s press conference.

“His work rate has been phenomenal and that’s what we want. We need those types of players hitting the best what we level and we want to have the chance to do that.

“Over the course of the season we’ve been missing goals and creativity in the final third and we need those players to step in and make the difference for the team.”

Addressing Lacazette’s future, Arteta confirmed that, one way or another, the issue will be addressed with discussions this summer.

“I’m always happy when people talk about our players and speculate – that means they’re doing well and getting attention from other clubs,” added the Arsenal boss. “The situation with Laca we will address in the summer and speak to him and just propose the future that we want, and that’s it.

“Up to now I just want players focused and only focused on performing and getting the best out of them for the team.”
