KCB were also held at home by bottom-placed Zoo FC in another Kenyan top-tier assignment
Ulinzi Stars and Nzoia Sugar battled to a 1-1 draw in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League game at Mumias Complex on Sunday.
John Njuguna opened the scoring in favour of the four-time champions before James Kibande equalized for the Sugar Millers.
The visitors needed less than 30 seconds to find the back of the net. Daniel Waweru was given space in the wing and he brought in a good cross and Njuguna rose highest to nod the ball past Humphrey Katasi in the opponent’s goal.
In the soggy Mumias Stadium, thanks to the heavy downpour, the Sugar Millers pushed for an equalizer and they were almost rewarded in the eighth minute when Moses Mwale beat his marker but his effort was gathered well by James Saruni.
The Harambee Star was called to action once again in the 25th minute when Hillary Simiyu was slipped in. It was a one-on-one situation and the custodian did well to stop the forward.
Nzoia finally managed to pull level in the 34th minute. Defensive lapses allowed the unmarked Kibande to beat Saruni from close range to make it 1-1.
Three minutes later, Masita Masuta had a massive chance to restore the Soldiers’ lead when Waweru found him in a good area but his header missed the target by inches.
It was Ulinzi who ended the first half on a high as Njuguna found space in a good area but his effort narrowly missed the target with the goalkeeper well beaten.
The hosts were the hungrier of the two sides after the pause and managed to win back-to-back set pieces in the first five minutes. However, they failed to capitalise on the advantage.
Mark Bikokwa and Bernard Ongoma had chances to get the winning goal but Katasi was equal to the task.
In another top-tier game played on Sunday as well, KCB played to a 1-1 draw with Zoo FC. Derrick Otanga scored for the Bankers in the 49th minute before Castro Ogendo equalised in the 60th minute.
