Paul Merson gives verdict on £30million Arsenal transfer target and makes Ian Wright claim

Reported Arsenal target Ivan Toney has been compared to Gunners great Ian Wright.

Toney is the leading scorer in the Championship so far this season, scoring 24 times already for Brentford six more than his closest competitor Adam Armstrong.

The 24-year-old only joined the Bees from Peterborough United last year, but his form means he is already being eyed up by Premier League clubs, and that reportedly includes both Arsenal and West Ham United.

It’s understood Toney’s future will likely depend on Brentford’s promotion efforts, much like Ollie Watkins who was allowed to join Aston Villa after the Bees failed to win promotion last season.

Brentford are currently second, albeit having played two games more than Swansea City in fourth, and if they fail to win promotion, it’s understood Toney could be sold for around £30million.

That would yield Brentford a profit of around £20million with the initial deal being worth £5million rising to £10million.

Top flight clubs may be wondering if Toney can continue his Championship form in the Premier League, and former Gunners star Merson believes he would be a worthwhile signing, comparing him to Arsenal great Wright.

“He’s a natural goalscorer who is desperate to score,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

“Toney reminds me of Ian Wright. His movement, the way he enjoys himself, and he can scores all kinds of goals too.

‘Wrighty was someone who, even if you’ve won 4-0, would come off the pitch with the hump if he hadn’t scored himself.

“Toney looks a bit like that and that’s what Brighton need. I see enough in them to get out of trouble this season.”
