Pep Guardiola has already revealed how Mikel Arteta improved Raheem Sterling amid shock links

Arsenal are reportedly interested in making a move for Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling this summer.

According to Mail Online, City coach Pep Guardiola is open to selling the English talisman as he aims to freshen up his side heading into the 2021/22 season.

The news of Sterling’s potential departure from the Etihad could be good news for Arsenal as they are said to be interested in the 26-year-old.

The Gunners’ boss, Mikel Arteta, worked closely with Sterling during his time as an assistant coach at City.

The club’s link with the English international stretches back further than the arrival of the Spaniard as head coach, though, with Arsene Wenger showing interest in Sterling during the summer of 2017 when City had been pursuing ex-Gunner Alexis Sanchez.

Sterling had initially struggled for consistency with the Citizens but Guardiola credited Arteta with helping the winger improve his end product.

“I think he is enjoying scoring goals, he’s not scared,” Guardiola said on Sterling in November 2017.

“Now he realises, wow, how fun and good it is to score goals. Now he is more focused on that.

“Mikel Arteta is working many, many days after training sessions for the last action, for the control in the last moment.

“For his improvement, [Sterling] wants to stay there and shoot and improve with the goalkeepers.”

Arteta then helped turn Sterling into a goalscoring machine with the Englishman netting 23 and 25 times in 2017/18 and 2018/19 respectively.

However, he has struggled in front of goal this season, bagging just 14 times across all competitions.

With Arsenal failing to qualify for Europe for the first time in 25 years this could be a difficult transfer for the Gunners to pull off as funds will be tight and Sterling may well be looking for European football again – however, if Guardiola’s words are right, the former Liverpool man may want a reunion with Arteta to rediscover his top form.
