‘Rage inducing’ – Arsenal fans fume over familiar incident during Manchester United win

Arsenal fans are not happy with an incident during Manchester United’s Premier League win over Brighton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men came back from behind to see off the Seagulls at Old Trafford with Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood overcoming Danny Welbeck’s first-half goal.

But Welbeck almost had another, and he just might have had it not been from a controversial intervention from united defender Harry Maguire.

Welbeck looked as though he would latch onto a cross before an apparent tangle of legs between him and Maguire meant he couldn’t reach the ball.

VAR reviewed the incident and decided it was not worthy of a penalty, but that has upset some Arsenal fans who noticed that the incident looked rather familiar.

During Arsenal’s defeat to Wolves in February, David Luiz was sent off for a very similar foul in the area on Willian Jose, a decision that proved costly for the Gunners in that game.

The similarity between the two incidents and the differing outcomes have Arsenal fans frustrated, particularly on a weekend when their European qualification hopes were dealt a huge blow following a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Here’s what some fans have had to say about the incidents on Reddit and Twitter.

Captjons – “I genuinely don’t know what a penalty is anymore.”

Ash_Ashok01 – “Mike Dean didn’t even go check the screen.”

@AFCArchie14 – “If David Luiz’s foul on Willian Jose was a red card and a penalty then how is Maguire on Welbeck not?”

@Oritse_E – “And Willian Jose kicked David Luiz. We can literally see Maguire’s hands on his shoulder.”

@Lyono71 – “Even as a Gooner, not so interested that #Luiz one WAS, just how WASN’T the #Maguire one given or even given much consideration. Has he affected the player or ball?”
