Ralf Rangnick has already delivered verdict on Arsenal’s £76million star amid Man United talks

Ralf Rangnick is set to become Manchester United’s interim manager until the end of the season, according to recent reports.

Our sister title the Manchester Evening News reported on Thursday afternoon that Rangnick had agreed a six-month deal to manage United until the end of the current campaign before taking up a consultancy position for an initial two-year period.

The veteran coach succeeds Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked last weekend following a 4-1 loss to Claudio Ranieri’s Watford side – a result that left them in eighth place in the current Premier League standings, six points behind fourth-placed West Ham United.

However, Rangnick won’t be in the managerial dugout as Chelsea host United at Stamford Bridge this weekend, with Michael Carrick taking charge instead.

The German’s first match as head coach is expected to be next Thursday when Arsenal travel to Old Trafford, a ground they secured a 1-0 win at last season thanks to a second-half strike from club-captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 63-year-old has never managed a game against the Gunners but has aided with the development of one of their star players in the form of Emile Smith Rowe.

Smith Rowe, who is valued at between €70-90million (£59-76million) by CIES Football Observatory, spent the second half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan with Rangnick’s RB Leipzig and the English playmaker certainly made an everlasting impact on the seasoned veteran.

“Emile Smith Rowe will more than likely be in the squad for the first time. He’s trained all week and gives us another option”, Rangnick said in April 2019.

“He’s shown in training why we took him on loan. He’s got a brilliant mixture of good physique, speed and an unbelievably good shooting technique.

“If the game allows it, it’s possible that we’ll bring him on.”

The German was also keen to bring him back on another loan the following season, admitting that Leipzig were keen on the youngster given his undeniable talent.

“We had two representatives from Arsenal here,” Rangnick said back in May 2019.

“They observed training and also talked to Emile. In conversation with them, we have already put forward that we are interested in another loan.”
