Chelsea have seen three offers for Romelu Lukaku turned down by Inter Milan this summer, football.london understands.
The most recent bid, that went in on Monday, included Marcos Alonso as well as £85million as the Blues look to sign a world-class striker before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.
The west London club are likely to bid for Lukaku again before the window’s conclusion, with the Belgium international now at the top of the Chelsea hierarchy’s agenda because of the complications surrounding striking a deal for Erling Haaland.
Borussia Dortmund are determined to keep hold of Haaland and the Blues now see the deal to be virtually impossible.
So, the champions of Europe have now switched their attention to Lukaku, who was a Chelsea player from 2011 until 2014, but never really received a fair chance at Stamford Bridge.
Despite reports of Inter wanting over £100m for the 28-year-old striker, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich “firmly believes” he can bring the Belgian back to west London, according to FCInterNews.
The Belgium striker, who scored four goals for his country at the recent Euros, is reportedly settled in Milan – where he has rekindled his form he showed during his time at Everton.
Lukaku was imperious during his time at Goodison Park, which earned him a big-money move to Manchester United, where he struggled a bit more before moving to Inter.
The Inter forward starred in his side’s Serie A-winning campaign last time out, with the former Chelsea man scoring 24 goals in 36 Italian top-flight appearances, which helped the Milan-based outfit secure the league title.
“Yes, I am staying. I feel good at Inter,” Lukaku told broadcaster VTM in June.
“I’ve already had contact with the man who normally becomes our new manager.
“Maybe I shouldn’t say that yet … but it was a very positive conversation. There’s also the challenge of doing it again [winning the league].”
Chelsea, as it stands, will kick off their new season with Tammy Abraham, Timo Werner and Michy Batshuayi as their striker options, but will be determined to add to their front line before the end of August.
