Romelu Lukaku could seal a sensational return to Chelsea this summer.
It was a decade ago when the Belgium international was on the books at Stamford Bridge, but he was never given a chance to establish himself as a regular starter.
Therefore, following a couple of successful loan spells, he joined Everton permanently in the summer of 2014 before moving on to Manchester United three years later.
Lukaku did not enjoy the greatest of spells at Old Trafford, but has since established himself as one of Europe’s best centre-forwards in two seasons at Inter Milan, netting 47 goals in just 72 Serie A appearances.
All of which has caught the eye of his former club.
After seeing three bids turned down by Inter, Chelsea have been handed a huge boost in their attempts to resign the 28-year-old with The Athletic claiming that Lukaku has told his club that he wants to return to London.
Furthermore, it’s claimed that the striker has requested that Inter accept an appropriate offer for him from the Blues – which will likely need to be in the region of €130million (£110m).
This represents somewhat of a U-turn on Lukaku’s part as just over a year ago he appeared to rule out the prospect of a return to the Premier League following spells with Chelsea, West Bromwich Albion, Everton and Manchester United.
During a Q&A session on Twitter in April of last year, Lukaku was asked: “Will you ever play in the Premier League again & will it be back at Everton?”
To which he responded by saying: “I don’t think so but I loved my time at Everton for real.”
Of course, he did not completely rule out the idea of returning to England, but that response did cast doubt as to whether another spell in the Premier League is possible.
Just last month, when asked by former Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair if he fancied playing in Pep Guardiola’s side, Lukaku’s reply all-but confirmed his stance on leaving Inter this summer.
“I am happy at Inter,” he said.
However, it would appear that Lukaku may have changed his mind about returning to England for another spell if reports about him requesting Inter Milan accept an offer from Chelsea are indeed true.
