Sergio Aguero backed by second former Arsenal star to revolutionise Mikel Arteta’s strongest XI

Arsenal would be a ‘good fit’ for Sergio Aguero ahead of next season, according to Gael Clichy.

Aguero will walk away from Manchester City this summer after a decade at the club, and he will likely take his fifth Premier League title with him.

Pep Guardiola’s men are sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table, and Aguero should be in a position to look for his next club without worrying about distracting from City’s title bid.

Chelsea are one of the clubs who have been linked with a move for Aguero, along with a number of La Liga clubs, including Barcelona who, it’s suggested, could turn to the Argentine if they don’t get very far in their reported Erling Haaland bid.

And while former Gunner Clichy does think a move to La Liga is more likely, he says it’s Arsenal rather than Chelsea who could be a ‘good fit’ for Aguero.

“I could see him staying in the Premier League, because he will want to climb to third or second [in the all-time top goalscorers charts],” he said to Stadium Astro.

“He can get there, for sure. Does he want that? Ten years with Manchester City is enough, I think he will move where he can enjoy it a bit more.

“Can he see himself at another English club? That’s the question. He loves the sun.

“I would like to see him stay [in England] to get to second or third in goals, but I think he will move away from the Premier League.

“I think Arsenal is a good fit, in terms of style of play. They play nice football and they create opportunities, but I really doubt he would go there.

“I’m pretty sure he will go to Spain.”

Clichy’s comments echo those of former Arsenal midfielder and pundit Paul Merson, who said Aguero would ‘fit right in’ at the Emirates Stadium.

In his role as a pundit for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Will he stay in England or will his next move be abroad? If he stays in England, I think Arsenal would suit the style he would be looking for. They’d be a good choice.

“Mikel Arteta was at Manchester City and the way Arsenal play – they get around the box and they do create a lot of opportunities. Arsenal do tick that box for Aguero.”

Aguero played in Spain for five years, scoring 74 times in 175 league appearances for Atletico Madrid before making the move to Manchester City in 2011.
