Shane Duffy’s Brighton resurgence helped by Ben White after £50m Arsenal move

Ben White returned to the AMEX Stadium on Saturday and helped keep out Brighton’s strikeforce following their upturn in fortune in front of goal.

Arsenal’s summer signing also played his part in thwarting the Seagulls’ threat from set-piece and deadball situations – something he knows all too well after spending five years on the south coast.

The Gunners failed to find a breakthrough in difficult conditions and were halted by Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk, the former enjoying his spell in Graham Potter’s side.

The Irish international has found the departure of White to the Emirates Stadium reinvigorating, finding the net already this season, after enduring a torrid time in Scotland with Celtic as their stronghold on the Scottish Premiership slipped away to their fierce rivals Rangers.

“Ben [White] is an unbelievable player and we were sad to lose him,” Duffy said, as quoted by Sussex Live.

“That’s the level he’s at now. You can see he is growing into his role at Arsenal now, he played really well [against Brighton].

“I got a bit of luck with a couple of Covid cases and a couple of injuries and I’ve got a few games and I’ve just tried to make the most of it.

“If it’s from the pitch, from the bench, I’m just trying to help people. That’s where I’m at the minute and I’m very grateful for the manager and this club.”

For White, his baptism into his £50m role in Mikel Arteta‘s side was a fiery one as newly-promoted Brentford had their way with the Gunners failing to stifle Thomas Frank’s side and simmer the bubbling pot of optimism at the Brentford Community Stadium on the opening night of the Premier League season.

But despite the less than impressive start to the campaign from White and his teammates, they have found their form winning three of their last four, keeping a clean sheet in all of those games with the 23-year-old establishing himself in the ever-improving base set out by Mikel Arteta.
