“The audacity” – Chelsea fans react to Arthur Masuaka’s bizarre West Ham winner

Chelsea slumped to their second defeat of the season away at West Ham United, courtesy of a bizarre Arthur Masuaka winner late in the game.

The Blues started the better side, opening the scoring through Thiago Silva from a corner. The centre-back’s free header bounced into the ground and looped over Lukasz Fabianski in the home goal.

West Ham then levelled shortly after, but through Chelsea’s own making. Jorginho played a blind pass to Edouard Mendy in goal, who was then heavily pressed by Jarrod Bowen.

The goalkeeper gave away the ball to the playmaker before bringing him down for a penalty. Maneul Lanzini stepped up and emphatically smashed it home to equalise.

The Blues then took the lead again through Mason Mount, who finished well with a side-foot volley from a cross on the left but the Hammers came out with intent and they ran the show in the second half.

Jarrod Bowen equalised after 56 minutes, finishing with conviction from the edge of the box.

Thomas Tuchel’s men struggled to create more chances and West Ham pushed until they found a breakthrough late on.

Masuaku received a quick throw in, then took a touch to cross the ball in. The ball appeared to take a deflection before swerving into the near post and wrong-footing Mendy in the goal.

Chelsea fans then quickly took to Twitter to discuss the goal and the odd circumstances it came in.

@Hans_21: “No words.”

@Cyrusamanya: “The audacity.”

@Brandon_Miller3: “Worst attempt at a cross in soccer history turns into a banger of a goal… reasons why i hate this sport.”

@deffomikes: “Hats off.”

@cfcnick3: “We’re finishing third aren’t we?”
