Mason Mount has completed a task at Chelsea that hadn’t been done since Frank Lampard was a player.
In scoring from the penalty spot to rescue a point for the Blues against Southampton on Saturday afternoon, the midfielder became the first Englishman to do so in the Premier League since his former head coach did it in 2013.
With regular penalty taker Jorginho on the bench at the time, Mount stepped up and sent Alex McCarthy the wrong way for his fifth league goal of the season and second under Thomas Tuchel.
Although, the 22-year-old admitted afterward that he was fortunate to have had the chance to take the spot kick.
“Tammy was actually taking the first one but obviously he went off at half-time so it was either me or Timo,” Mount told Chelseafc.com.
“The manager said it should be whoever feels confident on the pitch so I just stepped up.
“I missed my last one at Tottenham in the Carabao Cup so I wanted to make it right and I was confident in scoring as well.
“I’ve said before that it does mean a little bit more to me [to score against Southampton] and I scored here last season as well so it’s a nice ground for me to play at but the most important thing is to get the three points and we didn’t manage to do that so it’s obviously a disappointment.”
As per Mount’s admission, Lampard’s penalty record that had stood since November 2013 when the former netted in a 3-0 win over West Ham United (via transfermarkt) could have been matched by Tammy Abraham had the striker not been taken off at half-time.
But as it was the England international, there is a theory on social media that Tuchel has discovered the next Lampard at Chelsea – less than a month after replacing the club legend as head coach at Stamford Bridge.
