Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour has had a great start to life in his first loan spell away from west London at Norwich City, and that was showcased most recently in the Canaries’ 5-0 pre-season thrashing of League One side Gillingham.
Gilmour, 18, endured a promising Euro 2020 campaign which was overshadowed by him catching Covid-19 and having to self-isolate after the Scotsman’s stellar performance in the 0-0 draw with England at Wembley.
Once the European Championships had finished, the decision was made to send the youngster out on loan in the hope that he can get more first-team football experience ahead of becoming a key man in this Chelsea team in the years to come.
And the midfielder appears to be enjoying life on and off the pitch in Norfolk.
A video emerged of the youngster enjoying some quality time out at a Karaoke bar as he aims to get to know his local surroundings quickly.
Alongside all the fun off the pitch, the 18-year-old has made a good impression among the Canaries fans on it, and this is being noticed by Blues fans too who are closely monitoring every game in which Gilmour plays some part in.
One incident on the field in Daniel Farke’s side’s 5-0 win over Gillingham on Tuesday really caught the eye of all fans who tuned into watch the game.
At 2-0 in the second half, with 61 minutes having been played, Gilmour picked out an eye of the needle pass which dissected the Gillingham defence and eventually ended up in fellow midfielder Lukas Rupp slotting in from close range to round off a great move from the newly-promoted Premier League team.
Here’s how a select number of Chelsea fans reacted on Reddit to this pre-assist in the friendly.
@purujain said: ‘Delicious. What a perfectly weighted pass.’
@Foreign-Government22 explained: ‘What’s even more impressive is that he made the pass first time! No touches! Also because of his pass, the winger/fullback ran in the space. He improves others around him..’
@torts92 replied: ‘Xavi-esque.’
@dav_man named Chelsea’s youngster ‘Cesc Gilmour;’ after seeing the clip.
@NavyBabySeal followed this Cesc claim up and put: ‘More like Cesc. Jorginho is more about control and coordination. This is beyond Jorginho’s passing ability.’
@trolgod76ers stated: ‘That’s inch perfect. The answer to jorginho in 2 years imo.’
Additionally to this brilliant through ball to set up the third goal, Gilmour nearly scored himself on two occasions in the game.
“I was kind of raging I didn’t score,” he joked. “I should have hit the target, but a good win overall and a good performance from the boys.”
Despite his early impressive performances in these pre-season encounters, Farke is trying his best to keep the 18-year-old grounded after settling well in East Anglia.
“We are happy to have him but we have to be realistic,” Farke told the Eastern Daily Press after Norwich’s first pre-season win over King’s Lynn Town.
“We don’t want to praise him too much or put too much pressure on him. He had a great game for his national team and is part of a big team at Chelsea but we have to be a bit careful.
“He is a great character. He only arrived on Thursday after some more days off for the Euros. We did some tests and his first training session was with the team on Friday morning.
“I wouldn’t do that with a 37-year-old but with a young player you can throw them into the cold water. He proved he could swim.”
