Tottenham Hotspur may try and repeat a Dele Alli transfer trick this month, with the club reportedly making contact with Houssem Aouar’s agent over a move.
Aouar, who has less than two years remaining on his contract with Lyon, has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal throughout the past two summer transfer windows.
However, football.london understands that the Gunners are set to make a formal offer for Real Madrid star Martin Odegaard before the end of the month, meaning it could be time for Spurs to swoop in for Aouar.
Tottenham have made contact with the 23-year-old France international’s agent, according to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on The Arsenal Lounge, Romano said: “Aouar is a player they (Arsenal) love. They like Aouar. They are still waiting to see what happens with Lyon.
“It is a completely different situation when they wanted the player last summer, but it was not easy to find an agreement with the player and Lyon at the end of the window.
“But now he could still be an opportunity for Arsenal and for Tottenham. They are both in contact with his agent.
“So, they are still looking at the situation, and if Lyon will give the green light in the coming days, he could become an option for Arsenal too.”
If Spurs can swoop in and snatch Aouar from under the noses of their north London rivals, it would not be the first time this has happened.
Speaking back in 2017, former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted that the club tried to sign Alli from MK Dons before he eventually completed a £5million move to Tottenham in 2015.
“We looked at him,” Wenger admitted. “He’s done very well, he’s a complete player, he’s dangerous and it’s marvellous at his age.
When asked about how close Arsenal came to signing Alli, Wenger simply responded: “I don’t know.”
If Spurs are to make an official move for Aouar, then they may need to splash out £25m, according to ESPN, who say that Lyon have placed that price tag on the playmaker’s head this summer.

So far this summer, Fabio Paratici has been a busy man – bringing three new faces to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil and Cristian Romero have all been brought in to try and help the club challenge for Champions League football next season.
Paratici will be determined to add one or two more faces to Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad before the August 31 deadline.
