USA vs. Mexico: Three fresh faces who could help USMNT soccer during World Cup qualifying

The United States men’s national team has a golden opportunity this month to put themselves on the verge of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. The USMNT face Mexico on Friday and Jamaica next Tuesday (on Paramount+). But in order to move closer to a World Cup qualifying clinch, they may have to rely on a new face and two returning players with injuries playing an impact in the squad.

Before Friday’s showdown with Mexico, let’s take a look at three fresh faces who fans should put on their radar as potential impact players.

1. Joe Scally

This is the biggest name of the bunch, and one fans wanted. The former NYCFC man has became a sure starter with Borussia Monchengladbach at right back, and he’s held his own against stiff competition like Bayern Munich. We recently spoke with Scally, and he told us about his dreams of playing for the national team, and here he is. With Sergino Dest out injured, Scally is the most in-form player on the team at right back, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see Gregg Berhalter take things slowly with him.

What his role should be: A sure-fire starter, even over the injured Dest.
What his role likely will be: A borderline starter at right back, with a slight edge to Reggie Cannon at the moment. But Berhalter would be wise to go with the player getting regular minutes. I don’t think Scally starts versus Mexico but does against Jamaica. 

2. Jesus Ferreira

Another young FC Dallas attacker with a really bright future. Ricardo Pepi’s MLS partner in crime, Ferreira can play center forward or second striker, but his main role is as an attacking midfielder. He’s already played for the national team, scoring twice in a 7-0 friendly win over Trinidad and Tobago in January. He had eight goals in MLS this past season for FC Dallas and is a player brought in to add depth and versatility in the final third. 

What his role should be: A back-up striker brought on late if in need of more numbers going forward, or serve as an option at center attacking midfielder.
What his role likely will be: A back-up striker that sees very little of the field. 

3. Sam Vines

A standout performer for the U.S. during the Americans Gold Cup run this summer, Vines turned his fine form into a move to Belgium with Antwerp. The 22-year-old is a left back who can get forward but does track back well. He scored the winner against Haiti in the Gold Cup and is a confident, aggressive player. He isn’t very technically sound and won’t blow you away, but there is something to be said about his effort. A good piece to have for depth. 

What his role should be: A bench player that adds depth.
What his role likely will be: A bench player that adds depth.
