David Moyes has named a strong starting XI for West Ham United’s pre-season friendly against Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium this afternoon.
The boss has opted to start with a very experienced side full of first-team players from last season with a mix of youth and experience on the substitute’s bench.
Said Benrahma is named in the starting team on his first return to Brentford since his transfer from the Bees to the Hammers.
Moyes has elected to start with Lukasz Fabianski in goal with Alphonse Areola not in the matchday squad. The new signing will have to wait at least one more week before making his Hammers debut, potentially against Atalanta on Saturday, August 7.
In defence, Angelo Ogbonna has not been deemed fit enough to return to the side following his hamstring injury suffered against Celtic. Issa Diop comes in for the Italian to partner Craig Dawson at the heart of the Hammers defence with Aaron Cresswell and Ryan Fredericks in the full-back positions.
Mark Noble drops to the bench meaning Cresswell dons the armband. Manuel Lanzini and Conor Coventry link up in central midfield in the skipper’s absence.
Ben Johnson will be starting in a more advanced role than usual on the right of the attacking quartet alongside Pablo Fornals, and Benrahma behind lone striker Michail Antonio.
One man who is conspicuous by his absence is Jarrod Bowen, the 24-year-old has been in fine form throughout pre-season but has not been including in the matchday squad for today’s game with a minor injury.
Moyes has named seven players on his substitutes bench today including club captain Mark Noble.
