West Ham United have enjoyed an excellent start to their 2021/22 Premier League campaign.
The Hammers overcame Newcastle United on the opening day of the season, beating the Magpies 4-2 at St James’ Park in what was a convincing display considering they found themselves behind twice.
David Moyes‘ side continued their fine vein of form on Monday night, overcoming Leicester City 4-1 in what was a brilliant performance from the east London side.
To make matters even better, English frontman Michail Antonio became the club’s all-time leading top scorer in the Premier League era, surpassing Italian playmaker Paolo Di Canio’s 47-goal haul after notching his 48th and 49th top-flight goals against the Foxes.
And after the game, the 31-year-old admitted he had been thinking about the record throughout the contest against Brendan Rodgers’ side.
“Definitely. As a footballer, you’ve got to be professional and got to stick to it but you’re trying to make history so it’s always going to be at the back of your mind. I felt in the first half that it affected me but in the second half I came out and did the job”, he told Sky Sports when he was asked ifhe was thinking about the record from the first minute.
Antonio also explained the inspiration behind his incredible celebration which saw him grab a cardboard cutout of himself following his first goal.

“So basically, I’m thinking I’m gonna get this record, I’ve not been celebrating of late because of VAR but I’m making history so I’ve got to make it special. I started off doing celebrations so I’ve got to finish doing celebrations.
“Did any of you get what celebration it was by the way? I want you all to guess! Saved the last dance, the little lift at the end! “
