Having scored three goals, and claiming a further assist, in his last three Premier League outings, a place in Gareth Southgate’s team seemed to be on the cards for the 21-year-old.
Although he missed out on the initial Three Lions squad, Smith Rowe was eventually promoted from the Under-21s following the withdrawals of James Ward-Prowse and Marcus Rashford.
Last night, with England 5-0 up and cruising against Albania in their World Cup qualifier – thanks to a hat-trick from Harry Kane, and strikes from Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson – the talented midfielder was able to come on and make his debut at international level at Wembley Stadium.
The Gunners star replaced Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling with 77 minutes on the clock and made a positive impact despite the game already being well and truly wrapped up.
Now, however, a moment after the full-time whistle has caught the eye. Indeed, with Smith Rowe still on the pitch, fellow Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale was seen swiftly heading over to his England teammate.
The beaming goalkeeper, evidently delighted for his fellow Gunner, embraced the debutant with a big hug and pat on the head before offering some, presumably, kind words of praise.
It showcases the camaraderie that has been so evident in north London this season now translate into the England team. Ramsdale himself will no doubt be hoping to make his own bow for the Three Lions in their next game against San Marino on Monday night.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper has been included in a number of Southgate’s teams, and even travelled to Euro 2020, but as of yet has not actually stepped onto the field of play in an England shirt.
Much like Smith Rowe, Ramsdale has also been in excellent form of late. Having arrived from Sheffield United toward the latter stages of the summer’s transfer market, the Englishman quickly claimed the number one jersey from Bernd Leno. Since then, he has played eight times in the Premier League, keeping five clean sheets and not losing once.
With Bukayo Saka also involved with England, there is the chance that Arsenal fans will get to see all three of their exciting prospects on the field against San Marino.
