What next for Harry Kane as he remains in England as Tottenham squad fly to Portugal

As Harry Kane misses out on a second game for Tottenham Hotspur, what exactly does the immediate future hold for the England captain?

football.london understands that it was agreed the 28-year-old would remain back at Hotspur Way and will continue to work on his fitness as his Spurs team-mates flew out to Portugal.

Kane has been named in the squad for the Europa Conference League play-off legs against Pacos de Ferreira so will be able to take part next Thursday when the Portuguese outfit make the return trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

While keeping Kane out of the firing line right now is perhaps wise for all involved, he will also be required to return to the high fitness levels he had during the Mauricio Pochettino years at Tottenham with Nuno Espirito Santo having similar demands.

Off the pitch, before and after the Euros, the Kane situation has been a mess.

Those within Tottenham were left disappointed by ‘leaks’ about his desire to leave the club while last season was reaching its business end as well as the interview with Gary Neville, which came out before European football was achieved.

There was also the front page story of his ‘agreed departure’ which emanated from the wedding of Kane’s brother Charlie, also his agent.

From Kane’s side there has also been disappointment, with claims of ‘a gentleman’s agreement’ that he could leave halfway through the six-year deal he signed in 2018 should conditions not be met.

Then there was the farcical return to pre-season training. Those in the football side of the club expected Kane back to undergo the various tests and bloodwork required ahead of training on August 2.

However, reports now claim Kane had agreed a longer holiday period with the powers-that-be at Spurs, a trip to the Bahamas and Florida that would require him to isolate on his return up until two days before the season opener against Manchester City.

Those reports say that Kane and his camp are frustrated that that agreement was not communicated to those on the football side of the club.

During that week there was no official communication to the public for days from either side, only talk from inside Spurs about potential fines and no mention in Espirito Santo’s press conference of when he expected the striker back, only that there was a situation that would be resolved in-house.

Then eventually Kane released his statement five days later on the Friday, saying that he had never refused to train and would be returning on Saturday “as planned”.

Kane did return and isolated within The Lodge, the hotel within the club’s training complex, for five days before getting a negative test and then returning to train with the squad this week.

He was left out of the victory against City with Espirito Santo saying the player was training at Hotspur Way that morning. As Tottenham won the game, the majority of the 58,000-strong crowd sang ‘Are you watching, Harry Kane?’.

Kane’s social media channels have remained silent since that statement 12 days ago. Normally the accounts have a message of congratulations to his team-mates after they have won with or without him.

The awkwardness is palatable and that those inside the club talk of the spirit Espirito Santo has resurrected among the squad and was on display in Sunday’s win against the champions is testament to the new boss amid the noise or lack of.

For Kane, the awkwardness comes from a situation that he would have hoped would have been wrapped up before the Euros even took place.

Instead City, one of the world’s richest clubs, have made no real intention of making it difficult for Spurs to keep him, which has left Kane exposed in stuck in the middle of a transfer saga without the actual transfer.

Pep Guardiola has publicly spoken of interest but with just 13 days remaining of the transfer window, City, who have spent almost £1bn during the Spaniard’s reign, almost seem to be waiting it out to get the best deal possible, without the thought that the longer it takes, the less likely Tottenham are to even talk about a deal.

On Kane’s part there appears to be no suggestion that he will make himself unavailable for games and there has been no mention of an official transfer request.

Tottenham are looking to sign a new striker with Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez among those at the top of their list, but the plan was to partner them with Kane rather than replace him.

What happens next is down to City first and what kind of bid they eventually muster and then whether Levy changes his mind on having no intention of selling his star player this summer. At the moment that remains the case and nothing coming from Manchester has altered that a fraction.

For Kane, who stated in his interview with Neville that he would decide his own future, that has proved to be anything but the case.

Despite the incredible things he’s done for Spurs – he’s the club’s second highest all-time goalscorer – Kane’s great relationship with the fans has been strained in recent weeks and that will upset someone who came through the club’s academy and has always been lauded as ‘one of our own’.

As each day passes though and City fail to show any real interest in making the kind of bid that would shift Levy’s position, Kane maybe will have to start turning his attention to rebuilding that connection with those who have turned against him.
