What Thomas Tuchel has said about Jurgen Klopp ahead of Liverpool vs Chelsea

Comparisons between Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp have been in place for some time.

Both German coaches, with just six years between them in age, Tuchel has followed in Klopp’s footsteps somewhat.

Klopp’s first management job was at Mainz. he left there in 2008, with Tuchel taking the reins in 2009.

Klopp then moved on to Borussia Dortmund, eventually leaving the Bundesliga side in 2015 to take over at Anfield. Tuchel was Klopp’s replacement in Dortmund.

Now the German pair are in the Premier League and are about to do battle for the first time as Liverpool take on Chelsea at Anfield on Thursday night.

Ahead of the game, Tuchel has been asked about his relationship with Klopp and the comparisons between the two.

He said: “You enter the competition with the best clubs and coaches in the world and one of them is Jurgen clearly, he has proven that. It is a challenge for me to play against him and his teams but we will not meet up for a tennis match, we will play with our teams and we have to be prepared.

“Jurgen has proved to be outstanding, he transforms any club into a unit. He is a big, big part of the clubs.

“Of course we know each other but not as well as everybody expects. We never met in Mainz and then I was his successor in Dortmund so naturally, did not meet. Of course we meet when there is a farewell game for a player in Mainz, it is a lot of fun to talk to him.

“We meet at coaches meetings, UEFA meetings and we use the time to have lunch or dinner together. He is super nice to talk to and a very interesting man. But it is not as close like it might seem.”

Liverpool won the Premier League at a canter last season, but have struggled this time around. They are, however still seen as one of the two best sides in the division, along with Manchester City, who look to be coasting to the title this time around.

Tuchel’s challenge is to compete with those two and take Chelsea to the top of the table.

He added: “This is the challenge, this is the benchmark in terms of league wise and of course in Liverpool at Anfield, we are absolutely aware of this that we step into the biggest challenge.

“The best players play here and we have to face teams with the best managers. I am pretty relaxed abut all the comparisons, if there are, between Jurgen and me.”
