What Thomas Tuchel shouted at Kai Havertz before clashing with Pepe after Chelsea win

Thomas Tuchel was as animated as ever on the touchline on Tuesday night as Chelsea set up a Champions League semi-final clash with Real Madrid.

The Blues are somewhat the surprise package in this season’s competition.

When the last-16 draw was made last December, Chelsea would have been considered slight underdogs against Atletico Madrid to reach the quarter-final given Diego Simeone side’s performances in the top flight of Spanish football.

But in the two months between the last-16 draw and the first leg, plenty had changed at Stamford Bridge with Tuchel replacing Frank Lampard and instilling a new-found defensive resolve in the side.

And they went on to knock out the La Liga giants 3-0 on aggregate to advance to the quarter-final where they were paired with FC Porto – conquerors of Juventus.

Goals from Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell gave Chelsea a comfortable first-leg lead and left them on the brink of sealing a place in the semi-final ahead of the return leg.

Despite losing the second leg 1-0 on the night, the Blues progressed and will meet Real Madrid over two legs for the right to contest European football’s richest prize next month.

However, as spotted in UEFA TV’s touchline audio – uploaded to Chelsea Reddit – Tuchel didn’t want his side to get complacent earlier in the week.

In fact, the German could be heard shouting “play harder” in a clear message to his players.

The one player to respond to that instruction was Kai Havertz.

As Pepe looks to retain possession for his side, the German flies into a shoulder barge with the defender, knocking him off his feet and conceded a free-kick in the process.

Interestingly, at the full-time whistle things suddenly got heated between the players and coaches on the pitch.

Pepe, flanked by Porto boss Sergio Conceicao, got in the face of Tuchel before angrily waving his finger at the Chelsea head coach.

However, Tuchel was quick to play down the incident when he spoke to the media after the game.

“It was just a little argument with me and the coach but everybody was following me suddenly,” he said. “I thought it was between me and the coach, but obviously it was not. But no harm done there.”
