Why Cristiano Ronaldo decision is bad news for Chelsea in race for Erling Haaland transfer

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to stay at Juventus for another 12 months, according to reports in Italy.

The football superstar has 12 months remaining on his existing contract with the Old Lady and according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he will stay put in Turin for another season but is likely to walk away from the club next summer.

Ronaldo reportedly wants to return to Sporting Lisbon, but the 36-year-old is keen to see out the rest of his contract with Juventus, something that could spell bad news for Chelsea.

According to the Mail Online, Juve will now join a long list of clubs looking to make a move for Erling Haaland in the summer of 2022, where his release clause – of around €80million – reportedly becomes active.

It’s no secret that the Blues are chasing Haaland after the Norway striker’s sensational 18 months for Borussia Dortmund.

The 20-year-old scored 41 goals in as many games in all competitions throughout the 2020/21 season and has established himself as one of the most sought-after talents in world football.

However, this summer, Haaland will not come cheap, with Dortmund understandably playing hardball over his sale. The German club are even more reluctant to let the star leave Signal Iduna Park following Jadon Sancho’s move to Manchester United recently, which is all but completed, according to numerous reports from around Europe.

Haaland appears to be focused on Dortmund right now, despite the continuous transfer rumours. This is what he told Stadium Astro about the club’s new manager Marco Rose.

“I talked a little bit with him. I know him from before because I had six months with him in Salzburg. He’s a nice guy and I look forward to working with him.

“The training is so hard here, so it’s exactly the same as it was in Salzburg, a lot of hard training and there is going to be a lot of running. That’s what I expect the tactic to be to press a lot, run a lot and attack a lot.

“Now we have to have a good pre-season and have to get to know each other and we will see.

“We won the DFB Pokal last season which was very important for us as a club and the fans. That was important and we have to see.”

Haaland added: “There’s a lot of other good players that I still have a good tone with and will become even better.

“We have to see who I match the best with. We will see.”
