Arsenal vs Chelsea delivered the first genuine heavyweight clash of the season, and the champions passed the test. Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates on Sunday, condemning Xabi Alonso to his first defeat as Chelsea manager and keeping their perfect record intact.
It was frantic from the first whistle and arguably the best game of the campaign so far. Here are five talking points.
1. Morgan Rogers punished the club that wanted him
The Arsenal vs Chelsea contest was barely a minute old when Chelsea led. A free-kick was cleared into the path of Morgan Rogers on the edge of the box, and the £117m summer signing crashed it past David Raya after just 77 seconds.
The subplot writes itself: Arsenal pursued Rogers this summer before he chose Stamford Bridge. Scoring inside two minutes at the Emirates, against the club that tried to sign him, is about as pointed a statement as a player can make. It was his second goal in three games after also scoring in the 3-2 win at Fulham.
2. Arsenal’s response was the real story of Arsenal vs Chelsea
Going behind that early to a direct title rival could have unsettled a lesser side. Instead Arsenal went straight at Chelsea, and the tempo barely dropped for 90 minutes.
They thought they had levelled on 12 minutes when Riccardo Calafiori bundled in following a goalmouth scramble from a Declan Rice free-kick, only for the goal to be ruled out — Ezri Konsa was offside when he struck the post before Calafiori turned it in.

3. Konsa justified his deadline-week move in Arsenal vs Chelsea
Konsa made his first Arsenal start and looked immediately at home alongside Gabriel. With William Saliba out long term with a back problem and Jurrien Timber still working back, the former Aston Villa defender was signed precisely for a night like this.
He was unlucky to be involved in the disallowed goal and went close himself, forcing a smart save from Emiliano Martinez. Given Arsenal’s centre-back situation, that is a considerable early return on the investment — one of several moves we tracked in our transfer deadline day wrap.
4. Chelsea are genuine contenders despite losing
This is the important caveat from Arsenal vs Chelsea. Chelsea arrived having scored six league goals in two games — beating Fulham 3-2 through Joao Pedro, Rogers and a revitalised Cole Palmer, then edging Brighton 4-3 after Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Pedro had put them three up, with Palmer again decisive.
They were not outclassed at the Emirates. Estevao curled an 89th-minute effort that looked destined for the top corner until Raya tipped it over. Alonso has assembled an attacking side that will hurt most teams in the division, and the €408m outlay across twelve signings is starting to look coherent rather than chaotic.

5. Arsenal and Manchester City are setting the pace
The Arsenal vs Chelsea result leaves the champions perfect after three games, level with Manchester City at the top. Given Arsenal also beat City 3-0 in the Community Shield, and City have since spent £125m on Enzo Fernandez, the early shape of the title race is already recognisable.

What the Arsenal vs Chelsea result tells us
Two things. First, Arsenal look like the team to beat — not because they were dominant, but because they were behind inside two minutes and still won. Champions tend to find ways rather than always looking convincing.
Second, Chelsea are much closer than the scoreline suggests. Alonso has been in the job a matter of months and has already built something that can trade blows with the champions at their own ground.
