Premier League Matchweek 7 delivered 22 goals, four red cards, a strike from 51.3 metres and a record that had stood since the Victorian era. Nine fixtures were completed across Saturday and Sunday, with Tottenham v Coventry closing the round on Monday night.
Premier League Matchweek 7 leaves Manchester City still perfect and Brighton still terrifying. And at the bottom, two clubs finally got off the mark. Here is everything that happened.
Manchester City Make It Seven From Seven
City beat Ipswich 3-2 at the Etihad in the standout Premier League Matchweek 7 fixture, and it was harder than the scoreline suggests. Phil Foden opened the scoring on 19 minutes on his return to the starting XI, only for Daizen Maeda to equalise two minutes later. Erling Haaland settled it with goals on 34 and 69 minutes, and a third was chalked off for offside after a VAR review. Zian Flemming’s 90th-minute penalty made the finish uncomfortable.
Enzo Maresca became the first manager in history to win his opening seven Premier League matches in charge of a club. City’s seven-game winning start equals the club’s best league start on record, set in 1897/98. Haaland now has eight league goals and became the fastest player to 100 non-penalty Premier League goals, reaching the mark in 139 appearances.
The caveat: Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes both picked up injuries. With the 115 charges verdict still hanging over the club off the pitch, the on-pitch form has become its own storyline.
Brighton Score Three in 10 Minutes
The result of Premier League Matchweek 7, and it was effectively over before most people had sat down. Jaydee Canvot turned into his own net on four minutes. Diego Gomez scored from 51.3 metres on seven. Yasin Ayari added a deflected third on 10.
Brighton became only the ninth side in Premier League history to score three goals inside the first 10 minutes, and the first since Newcastle against Tottenham in April 2023. Charalampos Kostoulas made it four just after the restart and Jack Hinshelwood completed the 5-0 on 84 minutes.
Gomez’s goal was the longest-range strike of the season and the eighth longest recorded since 2006/07 — the furthest since Wayne Rooney’s 57.7m effort for Everton at West Ham in November 2017. Brighton have now scored 23 league goals, and their last four league wins have come by an aggregate of 15-0. Crystal Palace have conceded 17, their worst at this stage of a season since 1980/81.
Arsenal Grind One Out at the City Ground
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Arsenal was the opposite kind of football to anything else in Premier League Matchweek 7. Arsenal had roughly 75% possession, produced around 1.07 xG, and managed one shot on target all afternoon. It went in.
Noni Madueke, introduced at half-time for Eberechi Eze, scored on 80 minutes with a shot from a tight angle that deflected off Jair Cunha and past Matz Sels. Declan Rice completed 57 of 58 passes with 113 touches in the first half alone.
“Something we didn’t do the last two seasons, which was win the game,” said Mikel Arteta afterwards. Arsenal move second on 18 points. Forest, under Oliver Glasner, slip into the bottom three.
Liverpool Beat Nine-Man Brentford
The wildest game of Premier League Matchweek 7 came at the Gtech. Brentford led through Keane Lewis-Potter’s 44th-minute header, then lost Yehor Yarmoliuk to a red card for violent conduct in first-half stoppage time. Victor Munoz levelled on 62 minutes and Alexander Isak, back from injury, won it on 70. Vitaly Janelt was sent off for a second yellow in added time, leaving Brentford with nine.
It is the second time this season Andoni Iraola’s side have won after conceding first. Liverpool sit fifth on 12 points.
Chelsea, Fulham and Bournemouth All Win
Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton through a Pedro Neto double, the first arriving just after the restart. It was their first league clean sheet since January. The afternoon was overshadowed by a sickening collision that left goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with a fractured jaw; he has since undergone successful surgery, and Mike Penders came on for his debut.
Fulham beat Hull 1-0 through Alex Iwobi for their first league win of the season, despite Ryan Sessegnon being sent off. Bournemouth also got off the mark, beating Sunderland 2-0 with goals from Marcus Tavernier on six minutes and Evanilson on 48, helped by Kevin Danso’s 17th-minute dismissal. Bournemouth climb out of the relegation places; Sunderland have now lost four straight.
At St James’ Park, Aston Villa won 1-0 through Johan Manzambi’s 36th-minute finish, assisted by Joao Gomes. It was Unai Emery’s 100th Premier League victory. Newcastle had 16 attempts and one on target, and have now gone 16 consecutive home matches in all competitions without a clean sheet — their longest run on record.
Leeds and Manchester United Share the Points
Leeds 1-1 Manchester United was the one draw of Premier League Matchweek 7. Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead on 35 minutes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised on 51, and Bruno Fernandes went narrowly wide late on. United sit 13th on seven points with one win from seven. Leeds, promoted in the summer, are seventh.
The Premier League Matchweek 7 Table
Manchester City lead on 21 points from seven wins. Arsenal are second on 18, Brighton third on 16, Chelsea fourth on 13 and Liverpool fifth on 12. Brentford, Leeds and Everton are level on 10.
At the bottom, Sunderland have four points and Tottenham have three from six games, still without a win. Nottingham Forest and Fulham occupy the other relegation place on five apiece. Spurs can climb off the foot of the table with victory over Coventry on Monday night, which would be their first of the campaign.

What Premier League Matchweek 7 Tells Us
Three things stand out from Premier League Matchweek 7. City’s perfect record is being built on a margin that keeps narrowing — 3-2 against Ipswich is not a title-winning performance, and the injury list is growing. Arsenal are winning differently from last season, with eight of their 11 goals arriving in the second half. And Brighton, who were an outside bet in August, now have the highest goal tally in the division.
At the other end, the gap between the bottom five has barely moved since the international break. Fulham and Bournemouth winning on the same weekend tightens things further.
